Free tools on the public site

What you can use on the Free tools page: the idea evaluator, plus lookup tools, founder calculators and the fit quiz when they are switched on.

The Free tools page lists free tools for people who build. It only shows the tools that are available right now, so what you see there is what you can use. The idea evaluator is always listed. The others appear when they are switched on.

The idea evaluator

The idea evaluator gives your idea a quick AI check. You get a score on the Gap Score factors, a plain verdict (GO, CONDITIONAL or NO-GO) and the niches it matches in real complaints. It needs a free account, so click "Sign in free to run a quick AI check".

A free account includes a set number of quick checks each month, shown on the page. See Quick idea check.

Lookup tools, no account needed

When they are switched on, two research tools run without an account:

  • "robots.txt AI checker": enter a site and click "Check · free". It reads the site's public robots.txt, the file that tells crawlers what they may visit. It shows which AI crawlers the file lets in or keeps out, rule by rule, and the lines that change it. Nothing on your site changes.
  • "Keyword research": enter a seed keyword and pick a "Mode" ("All", "Questions", "Buyer intent" or "Switching and complaints"). Pick a country and a language, then click "Find keywords". You see the largest related searches with monthly volume, trend, difficulty, cost per click and intent, and how many matches exist in total.

Limits on the lookup tools

  • Each tool allows a few free runs a day per network, such as your home or office connection. Everyone on the same network shares them. A status line tells you how many are left today.
  • Keyword research also has a daily total shared by all visitors. When it is used up, the page says so.
  • Free runs reset at 00:00 UTC.
  • A short security check runs before each run.
  • A run that fails after it starts still counts. A run refused before it starts, for example for a private address, does not.
  • Results are not saved, and there is no export, share link or history.

Founder calculators

When "Founder calculators" is switched on, click "Run the numbers" on its card on the Free tools page, then pick a tool. Each calculator has its own page. You need no account, and everything runs in your browser: nothing you type is sent or saved.

How every calculator works

  • Type your numbers in the fields. Extra fields sit under "More inputs (optional)".
  • The "Result" appears once every field it needs holds a number. Until then it says "Fill in the fields above to see the result."
  • A field that is not a number in the allowed range says "Enter a number in the allowed range." That value is left out, never guessed.
  • When the formula can't use your numbers, the result names the problem instead of showing a number. For example, a price of 0 shows "Enter a price above 0."
  • The formula is shown under the result, in "How this is worked out", so you can check the math yourself.
  • Any currency works, because nothing is converted. "Show amounts in" only sets the currency sign on the result: USD, EUR or GBP. Commas and a leading dollar, euro or pound sign in a field are ignored.

What each calculator gives you

  • "MRR calculator": type how many customers are on monthly and on yearly plans, and their average prices. You get MRR (monthly recurring revenue), ARR (the yearly figure), paying customers and revenue per customer. Add this month's new, expansion, churned and contraction MRR to also see net new MRR and MRR at the start of the month.
  • "Churn calculator": type customers at the start of the month and customers lost during it. You get monthly churn (the share of customers who leave), churn over a year at that rate and the average customer lifetime. Add MRR figures to see gross revenue churn and net revenue retention.
  • "LTV calculator": type revenue per customer a month, gross margin and monthly churn. You get lifetime value in gross profit, gross profit per customer a month and the average lifetime. At 0% churn there is no number, because lifetime value has no ceiling.
  • "CAC calculator": type your sales and marketing spend and the new paying customers in the same period. You get the cost to acquire a customer. Add revenue per customer and gross margin to see the months to earn it back, and monthly churn to see LTV to CAC.
  • "Runway calculator": type cash in the bank, monthly expenses and any monthly revenue. You get your runway in months and your net burn. Add monthly revenue growth to see whether revenue covers your expenses before the cash runs out, and in which month. Expenses are kept flat.
  • "Break-even calculator": type fixed costs a month, your price per customer a month and the cost of serving one customer. You get the customers you need to break even, MRR at break-even and what each customer contributes. Add your paying customers today to see how many are still to win.
  • "Pricing calculator": type a monthly revenue goal, a price per customer a month and your conversion to paid. You get the paying customers and the visitors or trials you need. Add monthly churn to see the new customers you need each month, and months free on a yearly plan to see a yearly price.
  • "MVP estimator": list the features of a first version (an MVP) and rate the effort of each. Then say what you build, who builds it, what it needs and the hours a week you can give it. You get the likely hours and weeks and a complexity level. It estimates effort, not cost.
  • "Launch-readiness score": enter what you know about proof of the problem, demand, competitors and what is built. You get a score out of 100, how much of the formula has data, and the biggest gain from here. A blank field counts as unknown, not as zero.

When it is offered, the pricing calculator can start from what apps in a niche charge. Pick a niche under "Start from what apps in a niche charge (optional)" and click "Use as the price". The figure is the median one-time App Store price of the niche's paid apps, not a monthly price.

The MVP estimator and the launch-readiness score are the same tools members use in the app (see Planning tools), but nothing is saved here. If you took the founder fit quiz in this browser and allowed Preferences, the MVP estimator starts from your quiz answers, such as what you build and your hours a week.

The founder fit quiz

When "Founder fit quiz" is switched on, it asks ten questions about you and shows which product ideas fit you. You need no account. It runs in your browser, and nothing you pick is sent.

  1. On the Free tools page, click "Take the quiz" on the "Founder fit quiz" card.
  2. Answer the question on screen, then click "Next". "Back" returns to the one before, and a bar shows how far you are.
  3. The questions ask what you want to do next, what you would like to build, which markets interest you, what you can do yourself, your hours a week, what you can spend on a first version, where your customers are, how much risk suits you, when you want a first version out and how you would find your first customers.
  4. The markets and country questions are optional. Leave them empty for no preference.
  5. On the last question, click "See my fit".

The last three questions (risk, when you want a first version and how you find customers) are not part of the fit score. They only shape your profile card.

Your result

  • "Your founder profile": a profile type made from what you want to build and your hours a week, such as "Part-time SaaS builder". The types cover SaaS, mobile apps, extensions and plugins, and developer tools, each as side-project, part-time or full-time.
  • "Niches that fit you best": real niches from the library, each with a "Fit" score, a bar, the main reason (for example "Fits your budget") and its track. They come only from the niches anyone can open with a free account: the free previews and today's free niche, which is open to every account until midnight UTC. Click "Create a free account to open it" to read one.
  • "Your answers": what you picked, with the three answers outside the score listed apart.
  • "How fit is scored": the formula and the weight of each part. A part without data is left out, never guessed. If no open niche can be scored for your answers yet, the page says so.

Share, retake or clear

  • "Copy share link" copies a link to your profile type's own page. That page shows the profile name, its description and a "Take the quiz yourself" button. The link carries only the profile type, never your answers, and these pages are not listed in search engines.
  • "Retake the quiz" goes back to the first question with your answers kept, so you can change any of them.
  • "Clear my answers" forgets your answers and starts over.

Use your answers after you sign up

If you allow "Preferences" in "Cookie settings", your answers stay in this browser until you clear them or start again. If you don't, they are kept only while the page is open. See the cookie policy.

When you then create a free account in the same browser and the welcome questions open, a card asks "Use my quiz answers?". Click "Use my quiz answers" to fill your founder profile with your goal, what you build, markets, skills, hours, budget and country. Nothing is saved until you click it. The steps then open at the first one, so you can check and change anything before you click "Finish". Your email choices are never filled in from the quiz.

"No thanks" leaves your profile as it is. Either way, the browser then forgets the quiz answers, so the next account on a shared computer is never offered yours. See Create your account for the welcome questions.

What happens to what you type

The lookup tools use what you enter to run the check, and do not save the result. The founder calculators and the fit quiz run in your browser and send nothing. The quiz keeps its answers in this browser only if you allow Preferences. Ideas you check in the idea evaluator are kept in your account's private idea vault.

If you're signed in

Members run the lookup tools inside the app instead. When you're signed in, the lookup pages point you to the same tool in Tools, if Tools are open on your account. There, the robots.txt checker is free on every plan. Keyword research uses credits, shows more rows and saves each run to your history.
