Search TrendGap and save searches

Find niches, trend topics, apps and tools from one search box, search in plain words, and save a view to get notes on new matches.
Can't find an answer?

Write to support at trendgap.io and a person on the team will answer.

There are two ways to find things fast: the search box at the top of every signed-in page, and saved searches that keep an eye on a view for you.

Search everything

  1. Click the search box at the top of the page, or press Ctrl K (⌘K on a Mac). The search window opens.
  2. Type at least two letters: a niche, an app, a trend or a tool.
  3. Results are grouped under "Opportunities", "Trends", "Apps" and "Tools". Trends and tools show when those parts of TrendGap are open to you.
  4. Move with the arrow keys and press Enter to open a result, or Esc to close the window.

An app result is an incumbent: an existing product that TrendGap linked to a niche. If you can open that niche, the result says "Incumbent in" and the niche's name, and it opens the niche's report. Otherwise it says "Opens its store page" and takes you to the app's store page. On Free, niches your plan does not open are never listed by name. The window counts them instead ("more matching opportunities are locked") and links to the plans.

Search in plain words

Where it is offered, the window has two buttons under the search box: "Keywords" and "Plain words". Plain words searches by meaning, so you can describe a problem, an audience or a product in your own words.

  1. Open search and switch to "Plain words".
  2. Describe what you are looking for, for example "people who hate tracking invoices by hand".
  3. Press Enter. Besides niches, trends and apps, the results can include "Complaints" and "Sites".

Each plan includes a number of plain-words searches per day, and the window shows how many you have left today. When plain-words search cannot answer, for example after you have used today's searches, it shows keyword matches and says why. Keyword search always works. What you type in search is not stored.

The library has its own search box too: "Search titles and ecosystems" in Opportunities filters the cards on the page.

A saved search keeps the filters of a view in Opportunities or Trends, and tells you when something new matches them.

  1. Open Opportunities (or Trends) and set the filters you want.
  2. Click "Save this search" at the top of the page.
  3. Keep the suggested "Name" or type your own. Leave "New-match alerts" on if you want notes about new matches.
  4. Click "Save". The page now shows "Saved as" with your search's name.

Only the filters are saved. The sort, the page and the view are not, and on Trends neither is the growth window. When a new or refreshed niche matches your filters, or a topic newly matches them on Trends, a note goes to your Inbox if Inbox is in your menu. On paid plans it also goes to your alert email when "Alert emails" is on in Settings, under "Email".

Manage your saved searches

Once you have saved one, "Saved searches" appears next to "Save this search" on that page. For each saved search you can:

  • "Open" it to load its filters again.
  • Look at its "Matches": what matched when you saved it, and each new or updated match since.
  • "Turn alerts off" or "Turn alerts on".
  • "Delete" it.

How many saved searches you can keep depends on your plan, and the save window shows how many you use. If you move to a plan with fewer, the extra searches stay but send no alerts ("Over your plan's limit: no alerts").
